Pet-friendly summary
Zip Cottage is a self-contained conversion on the Tan-y-grisiau side of Blaenau Ffestiniog, up a steep hill road, and for a dog its strongest card is privacy. There are no shared corridors, no neighbouring guests and no reception to walk through: you park in your own gated driveway and step straight inside. Dog owners have not left a great deal of feedback here yet, but what there is, is encouraging. The host has been willing to let guests keep the gates closed so a dog could go out of the door without any worry about the road. That willingness matters, because the driveway is the outdoor space. There is no garden.
The location is the reason to come. A waterfall trail is a short walk away and the Snowdonia Slate Trail passes close by, so there is proper hill walking straight from the door, through sheep country and with all the lead discipline that implies. It is remote in a way that is both restorative and inconvenient: the access road is steep and narrow enough to be unnerving on the first drive up, and you will be cooking or driving a fair distance for food. There is a hot tub, available from four until ten in the evening, and the host leaves a generous welcome of drinks and treats.
Two caveats are worth weighing. The first is size. This is a garage conversion rather than a cottage, and it is small: with the sofa bed out there is almost no floor left. A large dog and two people will be on top of each other in bad weather, and there is very little storage. The second is finish and cleanliness. Guests have arrived to muddy floors, paw prints left on the bedding by an earlier stay and a hot tub that wanted a clean, alongside fittings and fixtures that need attention. If you are the sort of dog owner who ends up blamed for the previous dog's mess, photograph the place when you arrive.
One further point has come up more than once: the house that the garage belongs to has a CCTV camera trained towards the hot tub, and guests have found that uncomfortable when walking to and from it.
Best suited to one or two people with a single hardy dog who want remote hill walking, a hot tub and complete privacy, and who need neither indoor space nor a secure garden.
