Dog-friendly Cornwall in summer 2027: beaches open to dogs all day, the 10am-6pm bans and their dates, coast path walks, pubs and where to stay.

Cornwall coastal cliffs and azure sea in summer

Cornwall (the county at England's south-west tip, ringed by more than 300 miles of coast) is the UK's most popular summer coast, and it still works well with a dog in July and August. The summer beach rules are narrower than many guides suggest. No council beach bans dogs around the clock in summer, the bans that exist cover the middle of the day, and many of the best dog beaches have no restriction at all.

This guide covers summer 2027: which beaches stay open, which close from 10am to 6pm and when, the coast path stretches that work in the heat, dog-friendly pubs, and where to base yourself. Beach rules are taken from the dogs on beaches page of Cornwall Council (the unitary authority that runs most of the county's public beaches), which lists every restricted beach. For the full beach-by-beach list, see our Cornwall dog beach rules for summer 2027.

Which Cornwall beaches are open to dogs all summer?

No council restriction, any time of day

A beach that is not on the council's list has no council dog restriction at any point in summer. Good examples, by area:

North coast:

  • Sandymouth Bay near Bude - a National Trust beach of sand and rock pools under high cliffs.
  • Trebarwith Strand (a long sandy beach south of Tintagel that appears at low tide); check the tide times, as it disappears at high water.
  • Daymer Bay (a sheltered, shallow beach on the Camel estuary, opposite Padstow).
  • Constantine Bay near Padstow, Mawgan Porth between Padstow and Newquay, and Holywell Bay west of Newquay.
  • Trevaunance Cove at St Agnes (the former tin-mining village on the north coast) - a small cove with a beach cafe and pub.

South coast:

  • Talland Bay between Looe and Polperro - twin coves with a cafe terrace.
  • Pendower Beach on the Roseland peninsula - long, quiet and rarely crowded.
  • Coverack on the Lizard - a small fishing-village beach.
  • Loe Bar near Porthleven - a shingle bar for walking; the sea here is dangerous, so no swimming.

Newquay's main surf beaches, including Fistral, are not on the council's list either. Privately run beaches can set their own rules, and lifeguard zones apply on busy days, so read the signs at each access point.

Which Cornwall beaches ban dogs in summer, and when?

10am to 6pm only, on two sets of dates

The council's Public Spaces Protection Order (a legal order that sets dog rules on named beaches, sealed in March 2026) uses two summer windows. Both ban dogs only between 10am and 6pm.

15 May to 30 September (Saturday 15 May to Thursday 30 September 2027): Carbis Bay, Crackington Haven, Crooklets, Gyllyngvase, Polzeath, Porthmeor, Porthminster, Porthtowan, Sennen, Trevone and Widemouth. At Summerleaze in Bude, dogs are allowed but must be on a lead from 10am to 6pm between 21 May and 30 September.

1 July to 31 August (Thursday 1 July to Tuesday 31 August 2027): 34 more beaches, including Kynance Cove, Kennack Sands, Cadgwith Cove, Porthcurno, Praa Sands, Perranuthnoe, Porthgwidden, St Ives Harbour, Chapel Porth, Portreath, Porth, Swanpool, Castle Beach and Maenporth in Falmouth, and Readymoney Cove at Fowey.

Three wildlife sites near Hayle - Carnsew Pool, Copperhouse Pool and the Hayle Estuary - ban dogs all day, all year.

Breaking the order can bring a fixed penalty notice of up to £100. The council reviews the list, so check its page in spring 2027 before you travel.

Where can you walk a dog in Cornwall in the heat of the day?

The South West Coast Path and the shade inland

The South West Coast Path (the 630-mile National Trail around the south-west peninsula, roughly 300 miles of it in Cornwall) has no path-wide dog ban, and it runs above many restricted beaches rather than across them. In the middle of a hot day, though, an exposed cliff path can be as tough on a dog as the beach. Pick shorter stretches with shade or a breeze, and save the long cliff sections for the morning.

  • Tintagel to Port Isaac - a hilly, dramatic stretch of north coast; walk it early in the day.
  • Padstow to Stepper Point - an easy loop out along the Camel estuary to the headland.
  • Helford River - wooded creekside paths with plenty of shade, ideal for hot afternoons.
  • The Lizard - flatter clifftop walking between coves, with year-round beaches such as Coverack nearby.

Sheep and cattle graze many clifftop fields, so keep your dog on a lead near livestock, and close to you near unfenced cliff edges. National Trust land can carry its own seasonal lead signs for nesting birds.

Which Cornwall pubs welcome dogs in summer?

Coastal and village stops

The Pandora Inn (Restronguet):

  • Tidal creek waterside pub - one of the UK's most famous walking-pubs.
  • Dog-friendly bar + outdoor seating.
  • Boat moorings outside, real ales, fresh seafood.

The Bush Inn (Crosstown, Morwenstow):

  • Cliff-edge inn on the north coast.
  • Dog-friendly bar.
  • Atmospheric SWCP stop.

Cadgwith Cove Inn:

  • Cove pub on the Lizard peninsula.
  • Dog-friendly throughout.
  • Authentic Cornish fishing-village atmosphere.

The Old Inn (St Breward):

  • Bodmin Moor edge.
  • Dog-friendly bar + log fire.
  • Hearty Cornish food.

The Logan Rock (Treen):

  • Near Porthcurno on the SWCP.
  • Dog-friendly bar + garden.
  • Walking distance from Logan Rock + Porthcurno stages.

Where should you stay in Cornwall with a dog in summer?

Pick a base near an unrestricted beach

The simplest summer base is one within a short drive of two or three beaches that have no restriction, so you are never planning the day around the 10am-6pm window. Good areas:

  • St Agnes and Trevaunance Cove - an unrestricted local cove, with the north coast path on the doorstep. Chapel Porth, round the headland, is restricted only in July and August.
  • Padstow and the Camel estuary - Daymer Bay and Constantine Bay are unrestricted, though Trevone and Polzeath close to dogs from 10am to 6pm from mid-May.
  • Bodmin Moor edge - cooler, quieter and cheaper than the coast, within reach of Trebarwith Strand and the north coast.
  • Helford River and the Lizard - shady creek walks plus Coverack and the Lizard coves. Many Lizard beaches are restricted only in July and August.
  • South-east Cornwall - Talland Bay and the Looe and Polperro coast, usually quieter than the north coast.

School summer holidays in England and Wales run from late July to the start of September, and cottages in those weeks book furthest ahead. Late May, June and September give you the same coast with fewer people, and on the 34 beaches restricted only in July and August, no ban at all.

How do you keep a dog safe in a Cornish summer?

Heat, crowds and ticks

Heat management:

  • Avoid midday beach + cliff walks (12pm-3pm) when temperatures peak.
  • Early morning (6-9am) + late evening (6-9pm) safest walks.
  • Sand temperature can exceed 50°C in summer - test with hand first before walking dog.
  • Carry water bowl + 1-2 litres water per dog for walks over 1 hour.

Crowds management:

  • Weekday visits much quieter than weekends.
  • Avoid peak school-holiday weeks (late July-early September) if possible.
  • April, May, June and September are much quieter than the school holidays.

Tick season:

  • Cornwall tick activity peaks April-October.
  • Ask your vet about tick prevention before the trip.
  • Check dog after every coast path / inland walk.
Which Cornwall beaches allow dogs all year?
Any beach not on the council's restricted list, including Sandymouth Bay, Trebarwith Strand, Daymer Bay, Constantine Bay, Mawgan Porth, Holywell Bay, Trevaunance Cove, Talland Bay, Pendower Beach and Coverack. Privately run beaches can set their own rules, so check the signs on the day.
When do dog restrictions apply on Cornwall beaches in 2027?
From 10am to 6pm only, on two sets of dates. Eleven beaches, including Polzeath, Porthminster and Sennen, are restricted from 15 May to 30 September. Another 34, including Kynance Cove, Porthcurno and Praa Sands, are restricted from 1 July to 31 August. Before 10am and after 6pm dogs are welcome on all of them.
What's the best dog walk in Cornwall in summer?
The South West Coast Path, walked early or late in the day. Shady routes such as the Helford River creek paths suit hot afternoons, while open clifftop stretches like Tintagel to Port Isaac are best before the heat builds. Keep dogs on a lead near livestock and close to you near cliff edges.
Where should I stay in Cornwall for a summer dog holiday?
Choose a base near beaches with no restriction, such as St Agnes, the Padstow and Camel estuary area, the Helford River, or the Looe and Polperro coast. That way you can use the beach at any time of day instead of working around the 10am-6pm bans.
