Why "enclosed garden" is harder to find in Keswick

Keswick is one of the most dog-friendly towns in the UK, but most of the pet-friendly accommodation in and around it is full hotels (Armathwaite Hall, Ravenstone Manor, Lodore Falls Hotel) and country-pub-with-rooms format (The Coledale Inn, The Royal Oak at Rosthwaite). These properties welcome dogs in the bedrooms and public spaces but do not have private enclosed gardens attached to each room.

The Keswick self-catering market does include cottages with garden space - but we have not yet verified a Keswick-area cottage where multiple pet-traveller reviews specifically confirm the garden as fully enclosed and safe for a dog to use unsupervised. That standard is what keeps the Lake District absent from our main enclosed-garden picks list; the entry that comes closest is Newlands Farm Stables near Kendal, the largest-sample 5.0/5 paw-rated enclosed-space property we cover in Cumbria.

Best Keswick options where the garden situation is OK (but not 'enclosed')

If you specifically want Keswick proper rather than a 30-minute drive into the wider area, three properties balance the strongest pet-traveller signal with at least some outdoor space:

Ravenstone Manor (paw 5.0, 1836 wider-Agoda reviews) has grounds on the Bassenthwaite shore - they are walkable but not enclosed in the sense a small-dog owner usually means. The Ruddings (paw 5.0, 1081 reviews) sits in larger country-house grounds that work similarly. The Coledale Inn at Braithwaite (paw 5.0, 1572 reviews) opens straight onto Coledale beck-side land - good for a dog that walks well on lead.

For self-catering, Highside Farm (paw 5.0, 249 reviews) is the closest we have to a working-farm setting with practical dog space attached - similar in spirit to Newlands Farm Stables but in the Keswick area.

Verified-enclosed alternatives within 40 minutes' drive

If a properly enclosed garden is non-negotiable, look slightly outside Keswick. The two Lake District-area properties with the most explicit enclosed-garden pet-traveller confirmation in our inventory both sit within an easy day-trip-back-to-Keswick drive:

Newlands Farm Stables in Kendal (paw 5.0, 247 wider reviews) is our largest-sample 5.0/5 enclosed-space property. About 35 minutes' drive south of Keswick. The working-farm format means there is more space available to a dog than at most cottage rentals.

Gill Barn in Penrith (paw 4.6, 14 reviews) has the most explicit enclosed-garden confirmation in pet-traveller reviews for the wider area - one recent guest described the garden specifically as good for dogs. The barn explicitly accepts up to two dogs per booking, useful if you are travelling with more than one pet. About 35-40 minutes' drive east of Keswick.

What to ask the property when you book

If you want to confirm a Keswick property has an enclosed garden directly with the host, the three questions that matter most are:

1) Is the garden / yard fully enclosed by walls or fencing, with no gaps or open side passages?
2) Is the garden private to my booking, or shared with neighbouring properties?
3) Roughly how high is the perimeter, and is it adequate for a medium-sized recall-confident dog?

Get the answer in writing before paying. A host who responds quickly and specifically is the right fit; a vague answer is a signal to look elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

Q01Are there any 100% enclosed-garden Keswick options?
Probably yes - the Keswick self-catering market is large and we have not reviewed every cottage. But none of the Keswick-area properties in our review pool have the multiple-confirmed-pet-traveller-review-level signal that we use to recommend a property as having a verified enclosed garden. If you find one through direct host contact, we would welcome the tip via our /contact page.
Q02Is Newlands Farm Stables actually "in" the Lake District?
Yes - it is in the Lake District National Park, in the Kendal area at the southern end. About 35 minutes' drive from Keswick centre via the A66 / A591.
