UK dog travel to the EU has materially changed since Brexit. The old EU Pet Passport route for UK-issued documents has been replaced by the Animal Health Certificate (AHC) system. This guide covers what you need, what it costs, common pitfalls, and which UK destinations might work better than EU travel for 2026 dog breaks.

What you need for UK-EU dog travel 2026

Four-step checklist.

1. Microchip:

  • ISO 11784/11785 compliant (most UK chips comply - check with vet).
  • Must be done BEFORE rabies vaccination.
  • If older chip not compliant, your dog must be re-chipped + ID recorded.
  • Cost: GBP 15-25 if not already done (usually included in puppy vet care).

2. Rabies vaccination:

  • Single dose required - must be after microchipping.
  • 21-day waiting period after first vaccination before travel.
  • Re-vaccination per manufacturer schedule (typically annual or 3-yearly).
  • Cost: GBP 50-80 per vaccination at UK vets.

3. Animal Health Certificate (AHC):

  • Must be issued by Official Veterinarian (OV) - not all vets are OVs.
  • Valid for 4 months from issue + 1 onward EU trip + 4 months internal EU travel.
  • Cost: GBP 110-170 per certificate.
  • NHS-equivalent registered OVs cheapest typically; private vet practices higher.
  • Should be issued within 10 days of EU entry.

4. Tapeworm treatment (UK/Ireland/Norway/Finland/Malta re-entry):

  • Praziquantel treatment 24-120 hours BEFORE re-entry.
  • Must be administered + recorded by vet.
  • Cost: GBP 15-30 per treatment.
  • NOT required for first entry to EU; required for return to UK + a few other countries.

Old EU pet passport - still valid?

Pre-Brexit holders.

If your dog has an EU pet passport issued BEFORE Brexit transition (December 2020):

  • Still valid for EU travel.
  • No need to switch to AHC route.
  • Required vaccinations + microchip rules apply as before.
  • Tapeworm treatment for return still required.

If your EU pet passport was issued by UK vet POST-Brexit:

  • UK can no longer issue EU pet passports.
  • If somehow you have one, validity unclear - use AHC route to be safe.

If you live in EU but your dog has UK passport:

  • EU vets can issue valid EU pet passports - check with local vet.
  • This is the route for UK expats with dogs in EU.

EU travel alternatives - UK regions to consider

When EU travel doesn't make sense.

Why some dog owners skip EU travel post-Brexit:

  • AHC cost adds GBP 160-300 per trip.
  • Tapeworm timing window creates planning constraint.
  • Longer travel times for some destinations.
  • UK has plentiful dog-friendly alternatives.

UK dog-friendly destinations comparable to EU classics:

  • South Devon - Mediterranean-style coast with dog-friendly fishing villages (Brixham, Dartmouth) and unique inland Dartmoor scenery.
  • Cornwall - rugged coastal beauty with year-round dog-friendly fishing-village pubs + cottages.
  • Lake District - mountainous + lakeside walking comparable to Bavarian or Alpine destinations.
  • Snowdonia - mountain + coastal mix, less crowded than equivalent Continental destinations.
  • Yorkshire Dales - dramatic limestone scenery + dog-friendly walking villages.
  • Scotland Highlands - vast, wild walking country with extensive dog-friendly accommodation.

Q01Can I use my old UK pet passport for EU travel in 2026?
If issued before Brexit transition (December 2020) - yes, still valid. UK can no longer issue EU pet passports for new dogs since Brexit. New UK-based dogs need the Animal Health Certificate (AHC) route. EU vets can issue valid EU pet passports for UK expat dogs in EU countries.
Q02How much does dog EU travel cost UK 2026?
First trip: ~GBP 240 (microchip + rabies + AHC + tapeworm). Repeat trips: ~GBP 160 (AHC + tapeworm). Annual rabies booster: GBP 60. Two-dog family with 2 EU trips/year: ~GBP 920. Costs add ~GBP 160-300 per trip vs UK-only travel - factor into trip planning.
Q03How long before EU travel do I need the AHC?
AHC must be issued within 10 days of EU entry. Don't book too far in advance. Rabies vaccination requires 21-day waiting period before travel. So planning timeline: 4 weeks before travel for rabies + microchip if new; 1-2 weeks before for AHC issue. Use APHA's online directory to find Official Veterinarian (OV)-registered vet.
Q04Do I need a tapeworm treatment for my dog going to EU?
Not for EU entry. Only required for return to UK + Ireland + Norway + Finland + Malta. Must be administered by vet between 24-120 hours before return arrival. Must be recorded on the AHC. Missing this requirement means quarantine on UK return - plan the tapeworm timing within your itinerary.
