12 Victoria Terrace is a terraced stone cottage in Nantlle, a small village at the head of the Nantlle Valley with some of the best mountain views in Eryri (Snowdonia). For dog owners its strongest card is the setting: the garden at the back is enclosed, looks out over the valley, and has a gate leading towards the lake, which guests with dogs visited daily. Walks start from the door, and the drive to the foot of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) takes around half an hour.
Up to two pets can stay, which makes it one of the more flexible options in the valley for two-dog households. One caution from guests: the garden wall is on the low side, so a large or athletic dog is better kept on a lead outside. Inside there is a fireplace for drying off after wet mountain days, a well-stocked kitchen and a comfortable, lived-in feel.
The honest caveats are about upkeep rather than welcome. Guests arriving after dog stays have more than once found dog hair on the sofas and cushions and a vacuum overdue for emptying, and some of the furniture is showing its age - a couple of the dining chairs in particular. Anyone with allergies in the party should factor that in, and even dog owners may want to give the soft furnishings a once-over on arrival. Maintenance niggles do get reported to a responsive owner, but the changeover clean is not the property's strength.
The nearest pub, shops and takeaways are about three miles away, so bring supplies - and towels, which are not provided. Best suited to owners of one or two dogs who care most about walking country, water and views, and can live with interiors that put character above polish.
