139 The Ridgeway is a well-kept static caravan on Thorness Bay Holiday Park, tucked into the quiet north-western corner of the Isle of Wight between Cowes and Yarmouth, and it is set up for dogs rather than merely tolerating them. Guests travelling with pets regularly mention arriving to find dog treats waiting in the cupboard and spare towels put out for the dog, alongside the milk, ice and tea things the owner leaves for everyone.

The welcome comes across as genuinely relaxed. Dog owners report feeling at ease having a dog in the caravan rather than tiptoeing around it, and the interior is described as clean but comfortably lived-in, which is usually the right combination when a wet dog is part of the party. The caravan is fully equipped - full-size gas oven, air fryer, microwave, fridge freezer, plus crockery, games, DVDs and a TV in each bedroom - so a rainy afternoon indoors with the dog is no hardship.

Position on the park helps. It is a short walk to the entertainment complex with its shop and bar-restaurant, and Thorness Bay itself gives you shoreline and open ground close by. Yarmouth is a short drive away, which makes the Lymington ferry crossing an easy one if you are bringing the car and the dog over from the mainland.

Two things are worth knowing before you book. The park is not well signposted and several guests found the caravan hard to locate on arrival, so ask for directions in advance. And after heavy rain the ground outside turns muddy, which matters here because the caravan has light-coloured carpet - more than one dog owner mentioned worrying about it. A towel by the door solves most of that. Dogs also have to be added to the booking when it is made, and outside the park's designated dog-walking areas they need to be on a lead.

It suits couples and solo travellers with one or two dogs who want a quiet, low-cost island base with park facilities close by, and it earns a 4.7/5 paw rating from the guests who brought their dogs.
