How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 7 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 102 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 8.9/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: October 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.
Pet-friendly summary
Anne Cottage is an old stone cottage on Yeld Road in Bakewell, ten minutes downhill into the town and rather longer back up. It is quirky rather than polished - two bedrooms at opposite ends of the house, each with its own staircase, and a bathroom for each - and it takes dogs, which in a Peak District town where parking is scarce and footpaths start at the door is a genuine advantage.
What guests with dogs like is the position. You can walk into Bakewell for the shops and cafes, head out of the door onto the hills, and leave the car by the cottage all weekend. The house is well equipped for self-catering, the welcome pack draws consistent praise, and it is clean and comfortable in normal conditions.
The caveats are real, and dog owners raise them more than anyone else. There is no usable outside space: the rear yard is tiny, and has been described as dirty and slippery, and the road immediately outside is narrow and busy at rush hour, so a dog goes out on the lead every time. Nothing green sits within a couple of minutes' walk - the nearest open ground people have found is the cemetery - which turns the early trip out into a small expedition and makes a 10am checkout tighter than it looks.
Other reported issues are worth weighing. The heating has misbehaved in both directions, too hot to sleep on one stay and not warm enough over Christmas on another, with a dog moved upstairs to keep warm, and a knocking boiler has disturbed guests and dogs overnight. Animal droppings have been found indoors under the stairs. The staircases are steep and narrow, which matters with an older or heavier dog.
Best suited to one or two people with a lead-walked dog who want a characterful Bakewell base and are happy to do their walking in the Peak District rather than in a garden. It earns a 4.1/5 paw rating.
