Boshaw Cottage, Hade Edge

Boshaw Cottage is a stone cottage on a working farm at Hade Edge, high above the Holme Valley, and for anyone travelling with a dog the appeal is the walking. Footpaths run from the door across open moorland and down into Holmfirth, and a pack of laminated local routes is left in the cottage so you can pick one without a map. Some guests never use the car at all.

The welcome is generous. Dogs arrive to treats, a bed, bowls and poo bags, with cookies and milk for their owners, and the cottage is warm, well equipped and sensible about wet returns, with a log burner and space to dry things off. There are two butchers within walking distance for anyone self-catering. The pub at the end of the road has long been a draw, dog-friendly and putting out biscuits and water bowls, but it has been closed for rebuilding, so check whether it is open if that matters to your plans.

The outdoor space is the thing to plan around. There is no enclosed garden. The small front garden is shared and also used by children, so it is not somewhere to let a dog off the lead, and the surrounding lanes run through sheep country, which means leads on throughout. The ground immediately outside has also been reported as uneven, with a hole deep enough for a small dog to come to harm, so it is worth walking the perimeter on arrival. The cottage is old, with tight and steep stairs, and it takes one small to medium dog as standard, with a second only by prior arrangement with the owner.

At 4.6/5 it suits an active couple or small family with a single, lead-trained dog who want moorland walking from the doorstep, rather than anyone who needs a secure garden to turn a dog out into.
