Morgan's Barn is a high-end barn conversion in the Holme Valley just outside Huddersfield, with woods on either side and a twenty-minute walk down into the village of Honley. It is built for groups, and dogs are folded into that rather than tolerated at the edges: parties of five, six and nine have stayed here with a couple of dogs in tow and had the run of a big open living space, underfloor heating in the bedrooms and a hot tub that gets emptied and cleaned between bookings.
The owners set the tone. Homemade shortbread, a bottle of fizz, milk and bread are waiting on arrival, and dogs get their own treats in the welcome pack. Guests describe them as around when needed and invisible otherwise. Cleanliness comes up in almost every review, including from guests who react badly to animal hair and found no trace of it, which is not a given in a house that takes dogs.
The layout has one quirk worth planning for. The barn is upside down, with the bedrooms on the lower floor, and the only door out to the yard runs through a bedroom. It works, but it makes the last trip out of the night an awkward manoeuvre in a house full of sleeping people. The other gripes are domestic: the hob takes some learning, and there is only one small frying pan for a house that sleeps this many.
Honley is the reason to walk rather than drive. It is a proper Yorkshire village with dog-friendly bars and good food, the woodland walks start at the door, and dogs tend to get made a fuss of around the place.
