Bwthyn Bach, Dyffryn Ardudwy

Bwthyn Bach is a small barn-conversion cottage at Dyffryn Ardudwy on the Gwynedd coast, about five minutes' walk from a long sandy beach, and it has a loyal following among couples bringing a dog to this stretch of North Wales.

The cottage takes one dog per booking, up to 25 kg. Being let as a whole house means no shared hallways, and there is a private seating area outside. Guests regularly mention the welcome basket, which includes a biscuit for the dog.

The beach is the star. Dogs are described running and splashing along the open sand, and the coastal footpath heads off in both directions through fields and along the shore. A pub and the bar on the neighbouring holiday park are within walking distance, and Barmouth, Porthmadog and Snowdonia are a short drive away.

There are a few things to know before you book. Dogs must not be left alone in the cottage, which is not spelled out at booking and rules out evenings out without the dog unless you plan around dog-friendly pubs. Cleanliness draws mixed comments: a stain on the bedroom carpet that looks like dog urine has been reported across more than one stay, some guests mention dust, and the three barns are said to be looking tired. Cleaning supplies are basic, so bring your own.

The cottage also sits on the edge of a large caravan and camping park. Most guests barely notice it thanks to planted dividers between the cottages, though a neighbouring field used for caravan storage has spoiled the view for some.

Bwthyn Bach suits a couple or small family with one dog who want a quiet base a short walk from the beach and are happy to keep the dog with them in the evenings.
