Pet-friendly summary
Hwylfa'r Groes is a cosy, quirky cottage in Tal-y-bont that makes an ideal base for a coastal break with a dog. The beach is a short walk away across the road, the mountains start almost at the door, and a dog-friendly pub is a couple of minutes' stroll. Guests who brought their dogs rate it highly, giving it a 4.8/5 paw rating.
The cottage takes one pet per booking. The owners make dogs feel genuinely welcome, with a welcome pack that usually includes biscuits, treats or a chew for the dog alongside wine and Welsh cakes for the humans. The small garden is pretty and, according to owners of small terriers, secure enough to relax in.
Location is the other big draw. The nearby beach at Tal-y-bont welcomes dogs in summer, unlike the main beach at Barmouth, and there are woodland and riverside walks from the cottage as well as longer routes into the hills. Barmouth and Harlech are each a short drive, and the little station is under half a kilometre away for car-free days out.
Inside, guests praise the log burner, comfortable bed, thoughtful decor and owners who respond quickly when something goes wrong. The kitchen is a narrow galley with a small fridge and freezer and no dishwasher, so a group of four may find it a squeeze. The cottage sits on the main road, and a few guests noticed some traffic noise.
Not every report on cleanliness agrees: there has been a complaint of a strong dog odour in the rugs, while several others said there was no smell or hair at all. Holly leaves also drop in the garden, which are sharp underfoot for paws.
For a couple with one dog looking for beach walks, hill walks and a pub within easy reach, Hwylfa'r Groes is a lovely choice that many guests book again.
