How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 6 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 110 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 9.6/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: October 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.
Pet-friendly summary
Fir Tree Lodge at Thrumster, just south of Wick, is one of the easiest dog-friendly stops on the North Coast 500, and guests with dogs are close to unanimous in their praise. It earns a 4.8/5 paw rating, helped above all by a safe, enclosed garden.
Every dog owner who stays mentions that garden. It is a fenced green space right outside the lodge, and guests describe it as secure enough for a dog with a habit of escaping, which is a real comfort after a long day in the car. Parking is right outside, so getting dogs in and out is simple.
The lodge itself is modern, light and spotlessly clean, with a comfortable bed, a well-equipped kitchen and a good shower. The hot tub is the big draw for people, and guests found it already warmed up and ready on arrival. There is also an outdoor fire pit and good views over the surrounding countryside. Communication with the hosts is easy, and several guests liked it so much they extended their stay.
For walks, the Whaligoe Steps are around five minutes away and Wick is close by, and the lodge makes a relaxed base between the busier stretches of the route.
The caveats are small and practical. There is no washing machine and no microwave, which matters if you are mid-trip with wet, muddy dog towels, and the glass door has no curtains, which some guests sleeping on the sofa bed noticed.
For couples and small groups driving the NC500 with a dog, Fir Tree Lodge is about as straightforward and welcoming a stop as you will find in Caithness.
