How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 12 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 76 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 9.8/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: October 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.
Pet-friendly summary
The Stable is a small converted stable on the southern edge of Wick, and for anyone driving the North Coast 500 with a dog it ticks the two boxes that matter most: it is detached, and it has its own gated, fenced garden. It earns a 4.8/5 paw rating, and dog owners are close to unanimous that it is one of the easiest places in Caithness to stay with a dog.
The welcome is what guests mention again and again. Bowls and dog treats are left out on arrival alongside a few treats for the humans, and the owner is around to say hello without hovering. No dog charge comes up in guest accounts, but no fee policy is published, so confirm it when you book. A separate utility room with a washing machine and tumble dryer earns its keep after a wet walk in Wick's famously sideways rain.
Inside, the building keeps some of its old stable character but has been fitted out in a modern, spotless way, with a large bathroom that guests single out. It is compact rather than roomy, and storage for clothes is limited.
The setting is quiet, with cows and sheep in the surrounding fields and big northern skies, yet the town is only about half a mile away, close enough for the shops and the railway station. Walking in means following the A99, which is not much fun with a dog, so most guests drive.
A few practical points: the cabin is surrounded by stones that older dogs can find uncomfortable underfoot, the path to the utility room is unlit so a torch helps on winter evenings, and the driveway is a little bumpy. None of that put dog owners off. For couples touring the far north with one or two dogs, The Stable is a safe, well-thought-out base.
