How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 18 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 100 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 9.6/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: October 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.
Pet-friendly summary
Garden Cottage is a bright, beautifully kept little cottage in the heart of Ashover, and it is a favourite with couples travelling with a dog. Walks start right from the door, and the village has three pubs, a cafe and a farm shop, most of which guests found happy to let dogs in. It earns a 4.7/5 paw rating.
The hosts, who live next door, have clearly thought about dogs. Guests mention a water bowl and blankets left out, and the small courtyard garden is enclosed and pretty, with sunny and shady corners. Inside it is spotless, light and well equipped, and several guests say they had no sense that other dogs had stayed before them.
There are some honest caveats for dog owners. The garden gates are see-through metal and sit beside a public path to the cemetery, and with other dogs around the village, reactive dogs can be set off. One guest's gate blew open in high wind and their dog got out, and they were then asked to keep the dog off a neighbouring lawn. Another guest was unhappy that the route to the cottage passes through a neighbour's garden, where two dogs live, separated only by a light gate. The laminate floors are also slippery for older dogs, so a non-slip mat or two is worth packing.
Parking is a single allocated space that can feel tight against the neighbours, and the cottage has only one bedroom, though guests say there is plenty of room for two people and a dog.
For a calm, well-equipped village base on the edge of the Peak District, with miles of walking from the door, Garden Cottage suits relaxed dogs and their owners very well.
