The Stables is a one-bedroom cottage conversion on a smallholding at Northedge, in the lanes between Ashover and Tupton on the eastern edge of the Peak District, and it is set up for dogs with more thought than most self-catering lets manage. The owners live next door and have fenced a small garden off the back specifically so that dogs can be let out without bothering the free-range chickens, geese and ducks that roam the rest of the land.
Arrivals are generous. The welcome hamper runs to fresh eggs from the owners' hens, bread, fruit, homemade preserves and milk, and there is a separate goody bag for the dog alongside bowls, a towel and poo bags already in the cottage. The log burner is laid ready, which matters if you arrive late and cold. The kitchen is properly stocked with pans, crockery, utensils and condiments, and the utility room holds cleaning kit that earns its place after a muddy day out.
