Harbour View Apartment sits on Rhos Road in Rhos-on-Sea, a few steps from the promenade and a sandy beach, on the quieter western edge of Colwyn Bay. It is a self-contained flat rather than a hotel room, and that is a large part of why it works so well for dog owners: no reception to cross, no lift to share and nobody else to negotiate on the way out for an early walk.

Dogs are welcome, and the welcome is a practical one. A water bowl is kept in the flat, and the arrival extras guests mention - wine, biscuits, tea, coffee and toiletries - are left alongside it. The owner replies quickly to messages and has posted belongings on to guests after they left. A pet charge is not stated on the property's booking listing, so confirm the current pet terms before you travel.

The location does most of the work. Shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants are a short walk along the road, the beach is at the end of it, and the promenade path runs for miles in both directions, towards Colwyn Bay one way and Llandudno the other. Guests travelling with dogs consistently say Rhos-on-Sea itself is easy going about them, with most places along the front happy to have a dog under the table. Free parking is available on the street alongside.

Inside it is comfortable and properly equipped: a big, comfortable bed, a cosy sitting room, a full kitchen and enough kit that people describe it as a home from home. Several guests have booked it a second time.

A few things to know. The front door is shared with the rest of the building and it is noisy, which is worth thinking about if your dog reacts to comings and goings. The kitchen runs cold. Window cleaning has been overdue on more than one stay. There is no hairdryer and no USB charging point, and there is no light at the key safe, so a late arrival is easier with a torch.

It suits couples and small families with one dog who want a seafront base, a short walk to everything, and a whole flat to themselves rather than a hotel corridor.
