Waves of Memories, Rhos-on-Sea

Waves of Memories is a large house on Broadway in Rhos-on-Sea, on the Conwy coast a few streets back from the promenade. It is built for numbers - parties of eight to ten keep booking it for birthdays and family gatherings - and for a dog owner the useful consequence is that the garden had to be a real one rather than a paved yard.

That garden is what dog owners single out. It is enclosed, and guests describe it as secure enough that a dog cannot get out of it, which in a house holding ten people and a dog removes most of the daily friction. There is a climbing frame and a barbecue out there too, so the garden carries both ends of the party at once.

The beach and promenade are a ten to fifteen minute walk, which gives a dog a proper daily route without anyone touching the car keys, and Conwy is about fifteen minutes' drive with Betws-y-Coed, Snowdonia and the castle beyond it. Inside, the house is spacious, with enough bathrooms for a full party, comfortable beds and a well-equipped kitchen.

The caveat is housekeeping, and it deserves saying plainly because it is the one thing that has gone wrong here. The house is usually described as clean, but at least one large party arrived to find dust and wrappers under the furniture, a dirty fridge and barbecue, and dog hair left on the lounge rug from an earlier stay. That last detail cuts both ways: it confirms dogs genuinely do stay here, and it means you should not assume the rug is clear of another dog's hair when you walk in. If anyone in the group is allergic, that is worth knowing before you book.

Smaller points: glassware runs short for a full party, and the outdoor seating is functional rather than comfortable.

It suits a group holiday where the dog is one of ten rather than the centre of the trip, and owners who want an enclosed garden and a beach walk without moving the car.
