High Bullen Cottage is a small, quiet cottage at Chideock on the Dorset coast, tucked off the main road with views across the owners' garden towards Golden Cap. It is one of those places where the dog is clearly expected rather than merely permitted: guests arriving with one regularly find a bowl of water already put out, alongside the homemade scones and wine that have become the cottage's signature welcome.
The location is the main draw for walkers. Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast of England, is a walk from the National Trust car park at Langdon Hill just up the road, and the coast path either side opens up Charmouth, Seatown and West Bay. Lyme Regis and Bridport are both short drives. Be honest with yourself about fitness, though, because several of the best walks from here are steep and guests who expected gentle strolls have said so.
The cottage itself is compact and set up for two adults with one small dog rather than a family with a pack. The kitchen is properly equipped, the bed draws consistent praise, and the terrace outside is a good size for sitting out after a day on the coast path, though it is not a garden a dog can be turned loose in. The owners live on site and are around if anything is needed, which most guests count as part of the appeal rather than an intrusion.
Two small practicalities: the approach path has occasionally needed a check for mess before letting a dog off the lead, and the television takes some working out.
