Pet-friendly summary
Holcombe House is a grand, spacious holiday house in the leafy Wellswood area of Torquay, built for big get-togethers, and dog owners travelling with extended family have found it a relaxed place to bring a dog or two. Groups of up to fourteen describe having plenty of room to spread out, with two kitchens, a large dining room, several sitting rooms and a separate annexe, and the dogs fitting in comfortably alongside everyone else.
Inside, the house gets warm praise for being spotless, homely and well equipped, with comfortable beds and clear arrival instructions that make check-in smooth. Outside there is a large lawned garden, a terrace, a barbecue area and a smaller enclosed courtyard for eating outdoors.
The garden is the thing dog owners need to plan around. The main lawn is not dog-proof: there are no gates on the driveway, so a dog can walk from the garden straight onto the street. The enclosed courtyard and the annexe garden are the safer spots, though the courtyard can get very hot in summer and the annexe garden will not hold a dog that jumps. Calm dogs happy on a lead have been fine, but owners of small, quick or determined dogs should come prepared. The drive entrance is tight and angled, so larger cars need care.
The location is quiet but handy. It is a short walk downhill into Torquay or along the coast road to Babbacombe, though the climb back up is steep; the 64 bus stops by the house for anyone who would rather ride.
For a large family or group holiday where the dogs come too and are happy to stay close or on a lead outdoors, Holcombe House makes a comfortable base, with a 4.4/5 paw rating.
