Jacob's Meadow, Churchstoke

Jacob's Meadow is a small cluster of cabins and pods set in the hills on the Powys side of the Welsh border, a few miles out from Churchstoke and within an easy drive of Shrewsbury. The setting is the draw: quiet, green, framed by hills, with a pond in the garden and open country in every direction. One well-behaved dog is welcome per booking, and the property earns a 4.3/5 paw rating.

What makes it work for dogs is the format. Each unit is self-contained with its own outdoor space, so there is no lobby or corridor to walk a muddy dog through, and you can open the door rather than take the lift. Dog owners single out the walking: bridleways and hill paths run in several directions from the meadow, and the Mitchell's Fold stone circle is roughly a mile away across open ground.

Inside, the cabins are better equipped than the listing photographs suggest. The outdoor seating area shown in some pictures has since been enclosed as a conservatory, which is useful in Welsh-border weather and doubly useful with a wet dog.

The main caveat is density. Several units share the same meadow, and dogs from neighbouring cabins are close enough to matter. Guest feedback describes a neighbour's dog roaming loose, approaching other guests' dogs repeatedly and fouling around the shared grass, with no obvious site rule stopping it. Cleanliness between stays draws occasional criticism too, dog hair included. Neither would rule the place out, but a reactive or nervous dog will find this harder work than a single-unit rental in its own grounds.

Jacob's Meadow suits dog owners who want somewhere genuinely rural and low-key, with walking from the door and no shared building to negotiate. It is less suited to anyone travelling with more than one dog, or to a dog that would rather not meet the neighbours.
