Pet-friendly summary

Penrose Farm Cottage is a roomy, peaceful house on the Lizard Peninsula near Porthallow, and it is a genuine favourite with dog owners, some of whom have come back several times. Guests travelling with dogs are close to unanimous in their praise, and it earns a 4.7/5 paw rating.

The enclosed garden is a big part of that. Dogs can explore it freely, and it doubles as a place to eat outside with sea views. The one point to watch is a gap at the top of the steps leading into the neighbouring garden: more than one owner has suggested a gate there, and one improvised with a small table from the outhouse. Bring something to block it if your dog likes to wander.

Walking is excellent. Two quiet beaches are roughly ten to fifteen minutes away on foot, at least one of them dog-friendly, and both stayed uncrowded even in August. The coast path runs close by, there is woodland for a change of scene, and a dog-friendly pub serving good food is a short walk away, with more pubs and cafes around St Keverne.

The house itself suits larger groups, including three-generation families with a dog in tow. Guests describe it as clean, well equipped and comfortable, and it stays cool in hot weather, which helps when dogs are along. There is good parking, and while mobile signal is absent, the wifi is reliable.

Minor maintenance niggles come up occasionally, but nothing that put guests off. Kynance Cove, Falmouth, Helston and Porthleven are all within reach for days out.

For a family or group with one or two dogs who want quiet beaches and coastal walks from the door, Penrose Farm Cottage is hard to beat on the Lizard.
