Pet-friendly summary
The thing that sets Tarnside apart is a fenced dog run on the site. Very few self-catering places have one, and for anyone travelling with a dog that cannot be trusted off the lead, or one that needs to burn off an hour without a full walk, it changes the shape of a stay. The hosts also seem willing to make it work for the dog in front of them - one guest arriving with a terrier had the run adapted so it could actually hold a small dog, which is not something most owners would think to offer, let alone do.
The setting is a working stable yard on the edge of the North Pennines. Horses live in the looseboxes next door and there is a resident cat about the place, both of which guests enjoy and both of which are worth factoring in if your dog is unreliable around livestock or cats. Lead discipline around the yard is the sensible default. Beyond it, Talkin Tarn is a short drive with a good circular walk and a cafe at the end of it, Brampton is nearby for supplies, and Hadrian's Wall country is on the doorstep.
Inside, it is a small lodge done out to be cosy: a log burner with fuel supplied, lit and waiting for at least one arrival, and everything needed for self-catering. Two practical points follow from its size. The upstairs bedroom is reached by a spiral staircase, which will not suit everyone and did not suit one guest at all, though there is a twin room downstairs. And the interior is heavily decorated, with a lot of ornaments, cushions and soft furnishings, which is charming to some and a hazard with a boisterous dog or a puppy.
One real gap: there is no enclosed area directly outside the patio doors, and a guest with dogs specifically wished for one. The dog run solves the exercise problem but not the last-thing-at-night problem, so late toilet trips mean going out properly. One party also arrived to find the cleaning had not been up to standard.
Best suited to a couple or small family with dogs who want quiet, a fire and a secure run to fall back on. It earns a 4.6/5 paw rating.
