How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 28 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 133 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 9.7/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: October 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.
Pet-friendly summary
Thyme Cottage is a small self-catering cottage on a working farm in the hills above Whitby, and it has quietly become one of the more reliably dog-friendly boltholes on this stretch of the North Yorkshire coast. It sits in an enclosed courtyard with a wildflower meadow directly behind it, so the first walk of the day starts at the door. The view from that meadow runs across to Whitby Abbey and the North Sea.
Dogs are not merely tolerated here. Guests arriving with pets consistently describe a basket waiting with treats, poo bags, towels and blankets alongside the tea, coffee and biscuits laid on for the humans, and the paddock is left open for a run around morning and evening. Parties travelling with two dogs report no difficulty. The owners live on the farm and are mentioned repeatedly for practical help, from lighting the log burner before arrival to advice on where to park and where to eat.
The setting suits walkers with dogs particularly well. Robin Hood's Bay is a short drive, Whitby around ten minutes by car, and field and cliff walks start locally. There is a dog-friendly pub within walking distance. You do need a car, though - this is not a stay you can manage on foot from town.
Two things are worth checking. The courtyard is enclosed, but the main gate has a gap down the middle wide enough for a small dog to slip through, so it is worth a look before letting a terrier off the lead. The parking area is rough and workmanlike next to the cottage itself, and a few visitors have found the bed and sofa firmer than they would like.
For a couple or small family travelling with one or two dogs who want quiet, space and quick access to the coast, this is close to ideal, and its 4.8/5 paw rating reflects that.
