Toll Bridge Cottage sits at the end of the wooden toll bridge at Penmaenpool, on the Mawddach estuary just outside Dolgellau, and it is hard to think of a better-placed cottage in southern Eryri for walking a dog. The Mawddach Trail runs from the door along the old railway line beside the estuary: flat, traffic-free and open for miles in both directions, which makes it as workable for an elderly dog as for one that wants to cover ground.
The cottage is small, historic and genuinely quirky, warmed by a wood burner and kept spotlessly clean. It is a whole property let, so there is nothing shared, and there is a patch of outside space where you can sit and watch the tide move up and down the estuary. Parking is right there, which counts for a lot on this stretch of road, and the WiFi works properly if you need it to. The toll keepers in the booth opposite are part of the appeal rather than an intrusion, and there is a pub within a couple of minutes' walk serving food with a view over the water.
Provisioning is basic by design. This is self-catering in the older sense, and the nearest proper shop is a couple of miles away in Dolgellau, so arrive with what you need for the first evening.
The one drawback follows directly from the setting. Traffic crosses the bridge from early in the morning and passes right outside the door, and light sleepers do get woken; guests who sleep soundly barely register it. Cader Idris and the wider Eryri paths are within a short drive for bigger days out.
