Pet-friendly summary
Tyn Llwyn is the sort of place dog owners book when they want hills, quiet and walks that start at the back gate. This old farmhouse sits up a long single-track lane above the Mawddach estuary, a few miles from Dolgellau, and guests who brought dogs describe outstanding stays, with several already planning a return. It earns a 4.6/5 paw rating.
The house suits dogs well. Floors are practical hard surfaces that cope with muddy paws, there is a utility room with a washer and dryer for wet towels and walking kit, and two log burners plus the Aga make for warm evenings after a day out. The garden is enclosed, and several guests let their dogs run there happily. The property takes up to two pets.
The setting is the real draw. Paths lead straight out onto the hillside with views over the estuary and across to Cader Idris, and Coed y Brenin, Barmouth beach and the town of Dolgellau are all a short drive away. The owners get warm mentions too, from Welsh cakes left on arrival to quick help when a winter storm knocked out the power.
There are a few things to know. This is sheep country, and sheep do find their way into the garden, so dogs need to stay on leads both on the hill and, at times, in the garden itself. There is a cattle grid on the approach and no side gate, old mine workings on the hillside are fenced but worth keeping clear of, and the steep final turn on the drive takes a little getting used to. Wi-Fi is weak, and a hose for rinsing muddy dogs would be welcome.
For a family or two couples with active dogs who want a remote Welsh hill farmhouse with real character, Tyn Llwyn is a very easy recommendation.
