Trevor Cottage, Llandudno

Trevor Cottage is a large town house tucked down a side street in the middle of Llandudno, two minutes from the promenade and the pier, with walled gardens front and back. For a dog-friendly base in a Victorian seaside town you can do on foot rather than by car, it is hard to beat, and it earns a 4.6/5 paw rating.

Both gardens are walled and gated, which is what makes the location work: you are in the centre of town, but a dog can still be let out without a lead. Inside, the cottage is spacious and immaculately kept, and guests arriving with dogs consistently report that it does not smell of the ones that came before, which is not a given in a house that takes dogs week in and week out. The log burner and the sheer size of the place make it a good winter proposition.

Llandudno itself does most of the work. The North Shore promenade is at the end of the road, West Shore beach is about fifteen minutes on foot and gives a dog a long run when the tide is out, and the Great Orme, the town's cafes and several dog-friendly beaches are all reachable without moving the car.

Two practical warnings. The back garden has a gate to the yard and a second gate to the street, and both have been found standing open on arrival, so check them before you open the back door with a dog loose in the house. And there is no on-site parking: street parking near the promenade is scarce and expensive in school holidays, and you should expect to walk some way from wherever you find a space. There is also no mobile signal inside the cottage, though the wifi is strong enough for wifi calling.

Best suited to a family or two, with one or two dogs, who want to spend a week in Llandudno on foot rather than in the car.
