Every dog-friendly M1 services stop from London to Leeds - which have the best walks (Tibshelf and Skelton Lake lead), plus safety rules and where to stay.

Heading north to Yorkshire
The M1 runs about 190 miles from London to Leeds, and it is well supplied with services the whole way, so a dog is never far from a break. The northern half has the two standout stops.
Tibshelf (J28-29, Roadchef) is the pick for walking: dogs are welcome in all the public areas and there is a genuinely good dog-walking area, with more open space nearby than most motorway stops manage. Near the top of the route, Skelton Lake (J45, Extra) is the other highlight - a modern services built beside a lake just outside Leeds, with a boardwalk and parkland that make a far nicer leg-stretch than a strip of grass by the car park. In between, Trowell (J25-26, Moto), Woodall (J30-31, Welcome Break) and Woolley Edge (J38-39, Moto) all have grassy dog-walking areas; Woodall's is usable if not extensive, tucked to the side of the buildings.

Heading south towards London
The southern half of the M1, through the Midlands and Home Counties, is busier but just as well served. Donington Park (J23A-24, Moto) and Leicester Forest East (J21-21A, Welcome Break) break up the East Midlands stretch, while Watford Gap (J16-17, Roadchef) - one of Britain's oldest services - and Northampton (J15A, Roadchef) sit in the middle of the route.
Closer to London, Toddington (J11A-12, Moto) and London Gateway (J2-4, Welcome Break) are the last main stops before the capital. All have grassy areas near the car parks for a quick walk; as at every UK services, only assistance dogs may go inside the buildings, so plan to eat outside or take food back to the car with a pet dog.
Motorway services etiquette with a dog
Keep your dog on a lead at all times
Services sit right beside fast-moving traffic and slip roads - never let a dog off near a car park.
Use the designated dog-walking area
Most M1 services have a marked grassy area away from the fuel forecourt.
Always clean up
Carry bags and use the bins provided to keep the walking areas usable.
Never leave your dog in a hot car
Even a short shop stop can be dangerous in warm weather - take turns or keep it brief and shaded.
Carry water and a travel bowl
Offer a drink at each stop, especially on longer runs and in summer.
