Ivy House Hawkshead

Ivy House sits on Main Street in the middle of Hawkshead, the small whitewashed village between Windermere and Coniston that most Lake District visitors pass through at least once. It is a small owner-run guesthouse with off-road parking behind it, and dogs read as a normal part of the week rather than an exception.

Guests travelling with dogs describe a welcome that goes past simple permission to bring one. Treats waiting at check-in come up repeatedly, packed lunches are offered for days out, and the owners are unhurried about questions on where to walk. Size is not a barrier: several of the confirmed pet stays involved greyhounds, with room to stretch out and settle. Rooms are compact, though, and a couple sharing one with a large dog have found it snug.

Hawkshead is the real argument for the place. The village centre is traffic-free, so the last walk of the day is not a kerb-crawl past parked cars, and footpaths leave the edge of the village towards Tarn Hows and up over Latterbarrow. A shop, several pubs and a few cafes sit within a couple of minutes of the front door, which makes an evening out with a dog much less of a logistics exercise than a stay outside the village would be.

The negative feedback in the pool is narrow but specific: breakfast ingredients that read as budget-grade against the price of the room, instant coffee where something better was expected, and a housekeeping lapse in one room. It is a minority report against a run of consistently high scores, so treat it as something to check rather than a pattern.

No pet fee, weight limit or breed restriction is published for the property, so confirm any dog charge with the owners directly when you book, whichever route you book through.

Best suited to a couple or a solo traveller with one dog of any size who want a village-centre base with footpaths from the door. Less suited to families needing more space, or anyone who would rather keep contact with hosts to a minimum.
