Peacock Cottage, Coity Bach

Peacock Cottage sits on Coity Bach, a working hill farm above the Usk valley near Talybont-on-Usk, with long views over the Bannau Brycheiniog and a hot tub on the terrace. Dogs are welcome, and there is an enclosed outdoor area beside the cottage that guests with dogs have found useful. The farm setting is the whole character of the place: peacocks wander the yard, chickens and farm cats come and go, and the farm's own dogs make the rounds and will let themselves in through an open door.

That works beautifully for a sociable dog and badly for a wary one. Guests consistently describe the animals as one of the highlights of a stay, but a dog that reacts to other dogs, to poultry or to unfamiliar cats will be meeting all three, often without warning. It is a farm rather than a garden, too: the enclosed space sits next to working land, and guests with dogs have arrived to find strimming going on beside the cottage, which unsettled their dogs for most of a day. Anyone who wants a private lawn to sit out on with a dog should look elsewhere.

The walking is good. A field path drops down into Talybont-on-Usk in around twenty-five minutes, and the pub at the end of it is why most people do it. The canal towpath, the reservoir and the wider Bannau Brycheiniog paths are all a short drive away.

The cottage itself draws mixed comment. Views, hosts and hot tub earn steady praise; cleaning and upkeep do not. Flies indoors, hot water and heating that needed fixing on arrival, and a hot tub that was not always ready are all recurring themes, and the response when something goes wrong can be slow. The 3.7/5 paw rating reflects that split. It suits an easy-going dog and an unfussy owner who wants a farm, a view and a hot tub, and will accept rough edges to get them.
