It sits inside the Brecon Beacons national park, with Llangorse Lake, the Brecon canal and the Black Mountains all within an easy drive, and the owners have planted a wildlife meadow and around 1,500 native trees behind the property.
For walking with a dog the location does most of the work. The climb up Allt yr Esgair starts from Llangasty village hall a few minutes away and opens onto views over the lake and the whole valley; the canal towpath gives a flat alternative for an older dog or a wet day. Guests travelling with dogs consistently rate the area for long walks, and repeat stays are common.
The barn itself is compact but well sorted, with a properly equipped kitchen, a shower room, free parking and enough space that guests describe it as deceptively roomy. Arrivals have been met with home-made apple juice and Welsh cakes. It is quiet: the morning soundtrack is birdsong rather than traffic, despite the main road being close.
Two things need thinking about before you arrive with a dog. The driveway is not enclosed, so a dog that bolts should not come out of the car or the door off the lead. And there is livestock in the surrounding fields, which means lead discipline on the lanes immediately around the property rather than only up on the hills. Neither is a fault of the barn, but both change how you handle the first ten minutes of a stay.
