Ty Gwenyn, Coity Bach

Ty Gwenyn is a small gypsy caravan on Coity Bach, a working hill farm above Talybont-on-Usk in the Brecon Beacons, and it is the setting rather than the accommodation that decides whether it suits you and your dog. The hosts keep around seven dogs of their own, along with cats, a peacock, pigs, sheep and cows, and guests have free rein to walk the surrounding fields. Owners who have taken to the place describe hosts who are genuinely animal people, and a stay that works well for a sociable, confident dog.

Two things are worth weighing before booking, and both come from guests who travelled with their own dogs. The resident dogs roam loose around the farm, and that has gone wrong at least once: a visiting dog was bitten, and the owner could not be reached by phone at the time. If your dog is nervous, reactive or very small, treat that as a real consideration rather than a remote one. Separately, a pet charge of 25 pounds for a single night has been applied after booking without having appeared on the booking listing, so it is worth agreeing the pet fee directly with the farm before you travel.

The accommodation is genuinely tiny. Guests have repeatedly found it smaller than the photographs suggested, and some have been moved into a larger cabin on arrival, occasionally for an extra charge. The yard is a working one, with machinery, old vehicles and boats standing around it, and dog mess on the ground has been reported.

Best suited to easy-going owners with a confident dog who want hill walking, farm animals and mountain views, and who are relaxed about basic, very small accommodation in a working farmyard. It earns a 3.9/5 paw rating.
