Heading west into Wales

The M4 runs about 190 miles from London to the far side of Swansea, and it is the main route into South Wales, so there is plenty of chance to break the journey with a dog. As you cross the Prince of Wales Bridge, Magor (J23A, Roadchef) is the first services in Wales and one of Roadchef's sites with a dedicated dog-walking area - a handy first or last leg-stretch either side of the border.

Further west, Cardiff Gate (J30, Welcome Break) and Cardiff West (J33, Moto) bracket the capital, while Sarn Park (J36, Welcome Break), Swansea (J47, Moto) and Pont Abraham (J49, Roadchef, the last services on the M4) serve the run towards the Gower and West Wales. All have grassy areas for a walk, with dogs welcome inside for the toilets but not in the catering or shops.

Through Berkshire and Wiltshire

The English half of the M4, through Berkshire and Wiltshire, has the two best stops for a proper walk. Membury (J14-15, Welcome Break) has a large grassy dog-walking area on the westbound side, and Leigh Delamere (J17-18, Moto) in Wiltshire has a marked dog-walking area too - both a cut above the usual strip of grass by the car park.

Closer to London, Chieveley (J13, Moto), Reading (J11-12, Moto) and Heston (J2-3, Moto) cover the busier eastern stretch. All have somewhere to walk a dog near the car park; as at every UK services, only assistance dogs may go fully inside, so plan to eat outside or take food back to the car with a pet dog.

Motorway services etiquette with a dog

Keep your dog on a lead at all times

Services sit right beside fast-moving traffic and slip roads - never let a dog off near a car park.

Use the designated dog-walking area

Most M4 services have a marked grassy area away from the fuel forecourt.

Always clean up

Carry bags and use the bins provided to keep the walking areas usable.

Never leave your dog in a hot car

Even a short shop stop can be dangerous in warm weather - take turns or keep it brief and shaded.

Carry water and a travel bowl

Offer a drink at each stop, especially on longer runs and in summer.
